medical education

this is not about doctors or i wont promise that ill tell everything about doctors..but well ... being a medico i can say ive learnt a lot..seen a lot..felt a lot..
its not an easy life as many people imagine it to be....we are human after all..
but our training starts right 4m day one in medical school....training is not just about reading books..infact the truth is that ur success in life is not determined by how many books you have or how many degrees you have..rather its entirely different 4m education..its how you handle life & people..
Lets come back 2 medical education..even as a student we should learn qualities that can be useful when we are full fledged doctors..it starts with ragging;where we lernt 2 control our emotions in front of otheres..i dont condone ragging but i did learn something from that and im sure it will be helpful to me in future..
there was anatomy, physiology, biochemistry as subjects in 1st year..
anatomy included dissection of dead bodies..we call them cadavers..yeah..medical language!!
next comes pathology, pharmacology etc..
but im not givin a list of subjects..
the important part is clinical postings..where we get 2 interact with patiewnts..slowly learning patient care and hoe 2 deal with them..sometimes refered 2 as bedside manner, and i believe that ur bedside manner is the most importnt thing u can 2 be a successful doctor..
why? bcos ultimately when ur practicing, what matters is not how knowledgable you are,but how well u behave with ur patients..
but thats not all..medical education is not only about how u behave with ur patients or how many books you have read..it also includes how to become tough!!
TOUGH!!it sounds heartless but its true..we have 2 become tough in order 2 deal with so much everyday..
i saw a lot even though im just a medical student..ive seen patients bleeding to death because of accidents, birth of small babies, people suffering from burns, small children who have a heart problem & most probabably wont be able 2 survive 4 more than a year, inspite of gettin the best possible teatment,..but most of all ive seen human spirit..trying to do as much 4 each other..helping,caring...loving..
why do doctors have 2 be tough?? because we have 2 do soo much and much more..we have to deal with death everyday..soo many patients die everyday..inspite of our best efforts 2 save them..
The 1st time i saw death,i was 2 stunned and it rocked me like nothing else can, i felt soo helpless and i hated myself 4 not doing enough but i couldnt do anything.. we tried our best 2 save her..but the truth is that i knew(intuition maybe) that the patient wont be able to survive...i couldnt do anything 4 the next few hours..i was afraid that if i try 2 treat other patients, i might kill them 2....
but i just had 2 make myself tough so that i can treat the others..
people say that doctors r heartless but we are not!! we only put on a facade so that we can efficiently & effectively treat our patients without breaking down..
well this is what medical education is about..theres much more but.. i have said enough 4 now..
p.s:-comments r welcome..
